Playing By Ear
The most beautiful sound I ever did hear
was Your quiet voice
breaking through fear
You whispered—
gave me courage
to write
just a single note
to carry the night
And even though I hadn’t a clue
where this would lead—
You always knew
Holding me
through every Psalm
Leading the melody
tender and calm
And as chaos
closes in around me
Your singing
is the air that grounds me
For all the storms
You carried me through
tuned my restless heart
to You
Growing faith
for music
I cannot yet see
There were days
I had to play
before I knew the key
But You never needed
to explain the whole song
Yet You played for me
when I wasn’t strong
Guiding me faithfully
note by note
You showed me the scale
and taught me to float
When the counterfeit hurried
between echo and tone
imitations straining
to sound like home
When I rush the measure
You’re patient at the stand
You kneel beside me
and guide my hand
And as I learn to trust
and stumble through
You never stop the music
You just sit—
and You listen,
too
Your chords are gentle
they always draw near
And I’ll keep listening—
because Your symphony
is what I long to hear
